How Does Zoom Whitening Work? | Millbrae Dentist

Zoom teeth whitening is considered by many as the go-to dental procedure as far as getting whiter teeth goes. The bleaching process is fairly effective in lightening discolored enamel and dentin, usually the result of smoking, the natural process of aging and everyday consumption of stain-causing beverages, as well a food such as coffee, tea, cola and so on.

The whole process typically takes an hour, or even less. Also, while not necessary, the dentist may conduct regular teeth cleaning first prior to the actual teeth whitening session for optimal results.

The procedure begins with the dentist leaving your teeth exposed, while at the same time covering your lips and gums. The hydrogen peroxide gel is then applied, and the light is then activated to penetrate the teeth and remove any traces of stains, as well as discolorations. This should take no longer than 15 minutes, during which time you can listen to music, watch TV, or simply relax.

Once finished, the gel is re-applied for another 15-minute session and then again for another 15-minute session, making for a total of three 15-minute sessions or a treatment time of 45 minutes. After the procedure, a fluoride paste-gel that reduces sensitivity is applied to the teeth. While a single visit is enough to yield noticeable results, some patients may have to go through the procedure twice or more for optimal results. Also, after the procedure, you will be given a touch-up kit that you can use at home for maintenance.

NOTE: Those with strong gag reflexes or a history of dental anxiety may have a hard time going through the entire process.
